Child marriage, forced marriage and FGM are still widely accepted practices in most parts of the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
As you can see in the video below In Tanzania there are families who continue to follow the tradition and attempt to marry their daughters off when they’re as young as 12 or 13 years old. An early marriage means the parents will no longer have to take care of the girl and will receive cows in exchange. Cows are a staple of Tanzanian village life and some consider them more valuable than their own daughters.
An estimated 12 million girls under 18 are married each year. Girls who marry before they turn 18 are less likely to remain in school and more likely to experience domestic violence. Everything possible must be done to protect these vulnerable children.
Under Sharia law girls can marry at the age of 6, just like the Prophet Muhammad from the Koran did when he married Aisha. Muhammad consummated his marriage with Aisha when she was nine.
